This coming Sunday is Pentecost! Unfortunately, that statement would often be responded to with shrugs or yawns or statements like “so What.” For many it just doesn’t have the crowd appeal as Christmas or Easter. Christmas has presents, Easter has candy, and Pentecost? … well, you can wear red clothing if you want. It just doesn’t have the pizazz, does it?

So, we know why Christmas and Easter are important aside from the gifts and candy, those days celebrate the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus.  But what if the story ended there?  What if there was no Pentecost, how would that change your life or mine?  Of course, we know the story, on that first Pentecost the Holy Spirit came upon the Disciples and transformed those frightened men into mighty messengers who would spread the Gospel story over the known world.   We have learned by God’s word that this same Holy Spirit indwells the hearts of every believer.

So, as we celebrate Pentecost this Sunday, we need to ask ourselves a critical, and maybe even convicting question, what are we doing with that same Holy Spirit power that resides in us?  I can speak only for myself and my answer has to be ‘Not nearly enough!” Why?  Because I am certain that there are people within my sphere of influence that have not heard the Gospel story, people who do not know that Jesus loves them.

Friends, there is much work yet to be done, and we by the power given to us by that same Holy Spirit have the ability and the responsibility to do it.  May that Pentecostal spirit be awakened in you as you celebrate this Holy Spirit of God!

Yours in the love of Christ
