The Mid-Week Message is an On-Line Ministry of Pastor Dick Hurd and the Caton Church A Global Methodist Community of Faith January 21, 2026 “Sometimes the prayer is “God” I don’t even know what I need. I just know I need you!” I read this statement this morning and I quickly identified with it, and I think perhaps many of you might react the same as I did. God’s word reminds us that He knows even the inner groanings of our spirit, perhaps even when we don’t. In our prayers, when the words won’t come or even if they do come and they seem entirely inadequate, how do we communicate our deepest need? How do we say to God I only know I need YOU! For many people prayer life is marginal at best. Somehow, we fail to have a continuing dialogue with the God of our salvation. I think this happens because we have been taught that prayer has to be done in a certain way, with a lot of holy sounding words and phrases. We learned as children that we should pray on our knees with folded hands and closed eyes. In truth, I believe that prayer is meant to be a continuing conversation with God, all day, every day. It’s kind of like talking with a trusted neighbor over the back fence. Or confiding with a best friend those things you can’t tell anyone else. When Jesus teaches “Come unto me all who are weary and heaven laden and I will give you rest." I don’t think he is talking about physical burdens. He is speaking of spiritual burdens, those too difficult, too personal, too deep to share with just anyone. And so, he invites us to share them with Him! What a wonderful blessing that offer is for us. It’s like a father to a beloved child, come sit on my knee, tell daddy all about it. Remember? Yours in the love of Christ Pastor Dick Breath Prayer: God, can we talk? Amen |
