Beginnings

Pastor: Richard Hurd

Midweek message

The Mid-Week message is an On-Line Ministry                                           Of Pastor Dick Hurd and the “Caton Church”                      A Global Methodist Community of Faith                                                             October 8, 2025

One of my favorite writers is a lady named Ruth Harms Calkin. She writes these short poems that seem to say more in a few words than most of us could say in a long involved treatise.   One that caught my attention today is called “Beginning,”    She writes,

Lord, I’m at the end of all my resources.

Child: you’re just at the beginning of mine!

Have you ever been in that place, hanging at the end of a very thin rope, wondering what am I going to do?  I can’t find a way out of this situation.  It seems that this is where we all finally begin to realize that we cannot do it all by ourselves, it’s too hard.  We need to see and remember that at the end of our rope lies the beginning of our hope, when our hope is in Christ.

A beloved Hymn of the church says I Need thee every hour.   How true it is, and yet we continually try to make that one hour on Sunday morning suffice for the entire week.  The truth is that our Sunday morning rope is never going to be long enough or strong enough to last for seven days. Scripture reminds us to pray without ceasing. We are assured that God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light to our pathway, Jesus tells us “I am with you always even until the end of the age.”  These are our resources that God has given us to deal with this life. Let us not squander these but rather make use of them every day and every hour.

Yours in the love of Christ,

Pastor Dick

Breath Prayer; Lord, help me trust you as my first resource.  Amen
