I just saw a clip from the movie Hacksaw ridge. It is the story of Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector who served as an unarmed army medic during WWII and saved seventy-five lives during that battle.
The clip shows him praying in the midst of that conflict. In a moment of desperation he prays “What is it you want of me? I don’t understand, I can’t hear you"… and then he hears the cries for help from his fellow soldiers and he stands saying “all right” as he rushes to their aid despite the shelling and gunfire all around.
How often do we find ourselves in that same place? Not in a physical battle but in a spiritual one. How often do we ask, "Lord what is it that you want of me?" Do we fail to understand the intent and purposes of God in our lives and in our situation? Do we struggle to hear God’s direction and counsel!
I think all of those things are true from time to time and perhaps we need to ask ourselves why. Asking the tough questions is sometimes needed so we can see ourselves as God sees us. This is an important understanding. What does God want of me? Do we not know? Has God not told us? Do Justice, love kindness, walk humbly with Him!
We cry out, "Lord I don’t understand." Perhaps because we haven’t read the instruction book lately. It truly does have the answers we seek.
We pray, "Lord, I can’t hear you!" Maybe because there are too many other distracting noises in our lives. Whatever the case may be, whatever excuses we might offer up to justify our shortcomings, in the end we must decide and as Desmond Doss affirms “All right.” In other words, "Yes Lord, I will follow You, no matter the cost!" That is a tough step to take isn’t it, to follow no matter what? But is that not what those first disciples did? Is it not what every true disciple has done since then? Is it not what you and I are called to do now?
Stand up, proclaim “all right” and step out in faith because the battle for the souls of Gods people is not finished and many are crying out for help, crying out to you and me.
