Help me to trust You in my heart

“Even when life feels heavy, God is your strength, He will carry you when you cannot walk and lead you to a place of peace.” I read this quote this morning and it was attributed to Psalm 55:22. I looked that verse up in several versions and could not find those particular words at all.  So, I assume it is simply someone’s personal interpretation. Even so I found it to be meaningful enough to share with you this morning.

That phrase “when life feels heavy” is so accurate in describing how we sometimes feel.  Life is heavy when we suffer a loss or face a seemingly insurmountable problem. It is heavy even when the daily grind wears us down and we just want it all to stop for a while so we can catch our breath.

That passage goes on to say that God is your strength, and that He will carry you when you cannot walk and lead you to a place of peace.”   That all sounds lovely, doesn’t it?  So, why are we not in a place of peace?  Why are we still struggling with that heaviness?

I believe it is because we can’t bring ourselves to surrender that heaviness to God.  We refuse to give up the control. We are convinced that we can handle it ourselves, even though it is quite evident that we cannot.

When we accept the reality that our strength is in God and not ourselves, when we “let go and let God” as we often hear, then He can and will lead us to that place of peace. So much of our life in Christ is about surrender and allowing God to take control. And so often we see this as weakness but it is not. It takes much more strength and wisdom to surrender and trust God to bring you to that peaceful place, than it takes to continue fighting a battle that you know you cannot win.

Jesus calls us to cast our cares on Him and we resist, not because we are brave, or self-reliant but because we are afraid; afraid to trust, afraid to surrender control, afraid of an unknown resolution to that heaviness in our lives.

So many times, in scripture God tells us “be not afraid” and “trust in God” Maybe it is time for us to put our faith where our pride is!
