Having just had my second cataract removed, I seem to be obsessing with eyes and things relating to eyes. I was thinking of some of the sayings we often hear that refer to the eyes. Like, cry your eyes out, or keep your eyes peeled. When we agree, we see eye to eye, when we want attention, we want to catch someone’s eye. We even refer to the eyes as the windows to the soul, a way to see the character that lies within. When we see someone we love who has been absent for a time, they are a sight for sore eyes and we may think of them as the apple of our eye.
Did you know that last one is a Biblical reference?
Psalm 17:8 says “Keep me as the apple of your eye, Hide me in the shadow of your wings”
It seems that even the mighty King David needed the refuge that only God can provide. I wonder how much like King David we are? He was referred to as “a man after God’s own heart” and we would all love to have that position, wouldn’t we? To be a person after God’s own heart, wow, what an honor, what a privilege, but first we need to address the rest of that verse where God’s word says, “He will do everything I want him to do.” It seems like if we are to have the first part we must first do the second part. Sometimes following God and drawing near to Him is not as simple as it appears!
Thankfully, and perhaps with a bit of trepidation, we know that God sees us as we really are and we are assured in 1 Corinthians 13 that we will someday see Him as He really is. In the meantime, “Keep your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of this world will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.”
