Fence Sitting

Pastor: Richard Hurd

The Mid-Week Message is an On-Line Ministry                                                     Of Pastor Dick Hurd and the “Caton Church”                                                         A Global Methodist Community of Faith                                                  August 13, 2025

I wonder how many of our friends and family, or perhaps even ourselves are what we might refer to as “fence sitters” in regards to that sacred relationship with God. Do we straddle that proverbial fence thinking that we can remain there and have a share of both worlds? Do we claim and proclaim the blessings of God while keeping a toe in the pool of the world’s treasures and pleasures?  I think many of us, myself included, do that very thing!

It is not our intention to do so, but if our commitment wavers from time to time, and if we find ourselves leaning to one side or the other, does it not become a dangerous balancing act?

Perhaps we need to consider a couple of questions regarding that. less-than-solid, barrier between good and evil, or as we might try to rationalize it, between good and maybe not so good.   Maybe we should be asking, who owns that fence anyway?  Is it worth the risk?

If God owns the fence maybe we are okay, but would you be willing to bet your eternity on it? After all, if the fence is the border we would still be pretty darn close to the other side, wouldn’t we?  And if we were wrong about that and Satan owns that fence then we are in very big trouble already.

I think it would be wise for us to get off that fence altogether and proclaim as did Joshua “For me and my house we will serve the Lord.”     Fence sitting is a dangerous way to live, and an even more dangerous way to die. Just some food for thought!

Yours in the love of Christ

Pastor Dick

Breath prayer:  Lord Help me to stand with Joshua and stay off that dangerous fence.  Amen
