Blessings in snow and alligators

I saw a little video of a lady cleaning a foot of snow off her car and with every stroke of her snow brush she was repeating a mantra. She was saying over and over, “We don’t have earthquakes, we don’t have hurricanes, we don’t have alligators.   I suspect even those who do deal with earthquakes, hurricanes, alligators or any number of other calamities  that may enter into our lives might be heard declaring, “At least we don’t have a foot or more of snow to deal with.”

I wonder how often we complain about our difficulties and never consider the many blessings that are ours to enjoy every day. When we pray do we complain about all the things that are wrong in our lives or in our world, or do we spend our time and our words giving thanks for the many blessings we have received?   Of course, we all have burdens and we all have blessings and sometimes the balance between the two seems to be leaning to one side or the other at any given time.  This is the natural ebb and flow of life.

The difference is in how we deal with those constant changes.  Do we respond with “woe is me” complaints or do we recognize that the rain falls on the just and the unjust as scripture reminds us. And do we then reach out to any and all who may fall on the negative side of that unbalanced flow of life and offer our help and support, also as scripture reminds us to do.

I don’t think it is about what happens to us, but rather how we respond to what happens in us after what happens to us!  Jesus              calls us to respond to all of the circumstances of this life as we would respond if it were Him dealing with those same circumstances. I think that, that perspective might serve to reorient our view of life’s difficulties and of life’s blessings.   So, as you dig out and brush off and try to keep warm in the process, consider your blessings, pray for those with lesser blessings or more burdens and always do as the Lord leads you to do!

Yours in the Love of Christ
