I am having a family gathering at my home on Saturday and I have been trying to get everything ready. So as usual the belt on my lawn mower broke, my vacuum cleaner died and the weather forecast for Saturday is rain, so my stress level is higher it should be. However, I was just reminded that all of that doesn’t matter so long as we are all together and we can enjoy the day regardless of all the stuff. Sometimes we need reminders like that just to keep things in perspective.
I think we often do the same thing in our spiritual lives. We get so caught up in trying to do it perfectly that we forget or lose sight of what is important. Jesus calls us to tell His story and we somehow think that means telling our story with him in it and that of course important. But in truth our focus should be telling His story and how it changes our story.
Jesus came to save the least and the lost and whether we like to admit it or not, “that’s us!” And sometimes that process gets messy and we want to clean it up and make everything orderly and perfect. We want the lawn mowed and the floors vacuumed and our house in order for when Jesus comes. But Jesus is not interested in our tidy homes. He is looking for our purity of heart, he is asking how is it with your soul. Those are not things you can fix, or repair or tidy up just because company is coming. Those are things that require constant upkeep and maintenance on a daily basis. Try as we might, to get ready for when Jesus comes, it is so much more important to be ready for whenever He comes!
So regardless of how tall the grass is, come Saturday evening we will all be well fed, perhaps too well fed, we will have shared stories and precious memories, we will have laughed and maybe cried a little, if the memories bring a tear or two. But all will return to their homes having reconnected and reminded one another of what is really important and it will have been a really good day! It will have been a day that the Lord has made!
May you all have blessed days when you reconnect with loved ones, and when you reconnect with our Lord!
Yours in the Love of Christ,
Pastor Dick
