Midweek message

The Mid-week Message is an On-Line Ministry                          Of Pastor Dick Hurd and the “Caton Church”

A Global Methodist Community of faith                                         August 27, 2025

I feel like I should comment on the tragic events that occurred in Minneapolis this morning but what words could ease the pain caused by such a senseless act.  How can we explain or even comprehend how anyone could be so depraved as to declare war on innocent children as they worshipped and prayed in the assumed safety of their church school.

People will most likely ask, “Where was God while all this was happening.  I recall after 9/11 reading that same question and one writer’s response to it. I can’t remember who the author was but I think I can recall the essence of what his response was.  I think the answer went something like this…

Where was God?  He was right there, huddled between those pews, cradling those frightened children in His everlasting arms. He was right there agonizing over their fear, giving comfort in the midst of their chaos, peace in the midst of the violence. He was right there preparing them for their final journey and escorting them home.

And after it was all over, He was still right there grieving with the devastated parents, whose lives were changed forever.  He was right there calming the spirits of those first responders whose duty took them to places of sorrow, fear and confusion that they never anticipated. He was right there with the little ones who were injured granting a measure of peace and comfort in the midst of their pain and trauma.

And I believe He was also right there weeping over the young man who made such devastating choices and caused it all.

You see when these things happen it is our natural inclination to want God to fix it or to back everything up and prevent it from happening in the first place.  But God placed in the heart of every person the ability and privilege to make our own choices and frankly we haven’t always handled that responsibility very well. And so bad things happen to good people and tragedies like what happened today occur and we find ourselves asking the age-old question. Where were you God when life got so hard, when tragedy happened, when shots rang out and children died? Where were you then?  And God replies, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age!

Yours in the love of Christ

Pastor Dick
