Did I do enough? Do they understand?

I heard a song this morning by Luke Bryan that makes two very important statements. He sings: I used to talk to my kids about Jesus!   Now I talk to Jesus about my kids!  As a parent you always wonder, did I do enough?  Do they understand how important that relationship with our Lord really is?

Kids today have to deal with so much more than we ever did. For them, growing up happens way too fast, their innocence is so often stolen from them by a world bent on teaching them adult pursuits when they are still trying to have a childhood.

I am reminded of bit of wisdom shared by Corrie Tenboom, she wrote: “And so seated next to my father in the train compartment, I suddenly asked, "Father, what is sex sin?"  He turned to look at me, as he always did when answering a question, but to my surprise he said nothing. At last, he stood up, lifted his traveling case off the seat and set it on the oklllk.  Will you carry it off the train, Corrie?" he said.  I stood up and tugged at it. It was crammed with the watches and spare parts he had purchased that morning.  It’s too heavy," I said.  Yes," he said, "and it would be a pretty poor father who would ask his little girl to carry such a load. It’s the same way, Corrie, with knowledge. Some knowledge is too heavy for children. When you are older and stronger, you can bear it. For now, you must trust me to carry it for you.”

I wonder when, and more important why, did we ever stop letting kids be kids for as long as they possibly can be?  Why do we force them to grow up so fast? Childhood is a time to plant those precious seeds of faith in their hearts.  Seeds of love and joy, of sharing and caring, of helping others for the simple reward of having done so. Jesus gathered the little children around him, should we not gather them around Him again? If your children are small, talk to them about Jesus and if they are grown, talk to Jesus about them.

Yours in the love of Christ

Pastor Dick
