That most Holy night is only a week away and yet we sometimes struggle to make it real in our lives. The world likes to tell us that it is all just a story from old, just some tale of fantasy that our ancestors told us to explain away what they themselves didn’t always understand. But they still celebrate it don’t they! They still set aside this singular day every year and celebrate that which they say they do not believe! They exchange gifts and remember that gift giving is a part of holiday that they deny. They decorate with trees that are ever-green, a symbol of continuing life even beyond this life. They hang wreaths on their front doors, wreaths that remind us of the eternal life promised by the Savior whose birth they like to ignore.
All of this makes me think that the world really does believe in the God of Christmas. So where is that lost connection? I don’t think it is lost at all! The difficulty the world has in recognizing Christ is not historical but rather spiritual. If we recognize who Christ is and accept who He is, then changes will have to be made in the way we live our lives. Sadly, because of that, many are not willing to follow him so their only other course is to deny Him. Perhaps our task is not to convince people of the reality of God but rather demonstrate by our own lives that loving him is not a path to some kind of moral prison but rather a path to spiritual freedom. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus. It can also be a celebration of new birth for someone you love!
