Dumb Things

Pastor: Pastor Ruchard Hurd

The Mid-Week Message is an On-Line Ministry                                             Of Pastor Dick Hurd and the “Caton Church”                                     A Global Methodist Community of Faith                                       July 30, 2025

What is the dumbest thing you believed as a kid?  This is a question I have seen several times on social media and some of the responses are interesting, if not disturbing. Multiple respondents say that they used to believe in the tooth fairy, Santa Claus and even God!

For myself, I remember my mother saying, after I had come in from playing in the dirt or mud, “Don’t worry, you eat a peck of dirt before you die.” So, I had determined that if I didn’t eat any dirt at all, I would live forever!  That made perfect sense to an eight-year-old, so if I saw even a little speck of something unknown in my food that even resembled dirt, I wouldn’t eat it. Thankfully my mom explained that pepper wasn’t dirt, so I didn’t starve myself avoiding pepper any longer!  And thankfully I learned that not eating dirt is not how we achieve eternal life.

For those who used to believe in God, I would encourage you to take another look.

Perhaps you have consumed a lethal amount of dirt in your life and need a little house-cleaning.   God’s word reminds us “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”  1 John 1:7

Maybe some of the dumb things you believed as a kid weren’t so dumb after all!

Yours in the love of Christ

Pastor Dick

Breath Prayer: Lord, root out the dirt in my life and make me clean again.  Amen
