As I begin writing this message, much of the world is waiting and watching for the moon to block out the sun in a total eclipse. It is being promoted as a once in a generation event and so, many people are completely enthralled with it. This is of course a pretty exciting day astrologically speaking. Not only a total eclipse but several planets are aligned in a very rare and unusual way and a very large meteor storm is on schedule to be visible tonight. What is amazing to me is that people will witness these things and still not comprehend the complexity of our created universe and how it all points us to an omnipotent creator God, a God who controls all of it simply by His all-consuming will!
In the tenth chapter of Joshua the scripture bears witness to God’s phenomenal power over His creation as Joshua reports; 12 On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.” 13 So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. 14 There has never been a day like it before or since.
No doubt, a total eclipse is pretty cool, but how cool and how faith affirming would it be to see the Lord of all creation completely halt the motion of the heavenly bodies for a full day? I don’t know about you but I cannot even begin to wrap my mind around that! We talk a lot about the power of our God, but when He shows it to us, we consider it almost like a carnival side show, a media event or even an astrological anomaly. It is none of those things, it is the precise plan and design of our creator God. How blessed we are!
