In just few days we will observe and celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. We will hail him as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Our praises, just like the praises of long ago will bring honor to his name as we celebrate His presence among us. Of course, this is all good and appropriate but it makes me wonder. I wonder if we ever stop to think how Jesus felt as He rode into the Holy City astride a donkey with the flood of praise gathering around Him and the specter of the cross looming before Him.
Was He fearful? His prayer in the garden asking if this cup could pass from him would lead us to believe that He was very much dreading what was to come. Was He disappointed knowing that many who shouted Hosanna on that first Palm Sunday would be shouting crucify in just a few days? Was he saddened with the knowledge that one of his inner circle would betray Him and another deny Him? Or was he just anxious to get it all over with so He could return to the Father.
I can’t help but think that all of these things may have been burdening his mind as well as his spirit. I think the most amazing thing to me was that regardless of all these things, He went through with it anyway. He didn’t have too; He could have called upon those legions of Angels to take Him home. He could have decided that we were simply not worth it! But He didn’t!! We can ask and wonder and speculate all day long about why, but the reality that we need to understand is incomprehensible to us.
Jesus chose to die because he found us in our sin and loves us too much to leave us there! So, this Sunday when you sing “Hosanna Loud Hosanna.” Sing it with all the praise and gratitude you can muster, because He didn’t have to do it, but he did it for you!
Yours in the Love of Christ
