The Mid-Week Message Is an On-Line Ministry of Pastor Dick Hurd and the “Caton Church” A Global Methodist Community of Faith March 4, 2026 I stopped at a convenient store this morning and I was accosted. Not by anyone with a sales pitch or an unreasonable demand. No, this was different, I was drawn into submission by a warm… blueberry… muffin, and I must confess I surrendered without so much as a minor skirmish. It was over before it started. Sad but true. And perhaps the worst part, or the best part, depending on your perspective, I intend to enjoy it thoroughly. God’s word reminds us, “For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6: 12 Now, I am not suggesting that my blueberry muffin comes under the heading of, or even could be compared to, the spiritual hosts of wickedness. However, I am wondering if we sometimes surrender to the allure of those principalities and powers as easily as I surrendered to that aforementioned muffin? It is really that fundamental, isn’t it? There is something that we desire, it is right there for the taking and without a thought of reward or consequence we grab it. I know that muffin will destroy my diet for the day but I really wanted it, and I sure hope it measures up to my expectations! Sadly, the choice to stand fast or to surrender to our desires often has greater consequences than a few extra calories. And sometimes those choices can have eternal significance. So, the next time you face such a temptation stop and consider, is it just a muffin or is it something more consequential, something Eternal. Yours in the love of Christ Pastor Dick Breath Prayer: Lord Help me make good choices Amen
